HMM Dialogue on Racial Justice

In September 2020, in response to the George Floyd tragedy and the national Black Lives Matter protests, Hartford Meeting Friends began a series of programs with the intent of exploring our individual and collective feelings, beliefs, ideals, hopes, concerns, and dreams around a variety of topics.  Through readings, videos, and discussion, we listened to the experiences of people of color and learned from the extraordinarily difficult history and current realities of racial injustice.

This series was divided into 3 segments: Educating Ourselves, the Quaker Response, and the formation of a book club with an African-American faith community.

An extensive list of  video clips and readings was developed.

Additionally, a Dialogue on Racism Book Club was formed with friends and members of one of the religious communities in Hartford, as a way to share different perspectives on our individual and community experience in regard to racism, worship and faith practice.

The Racial Justice Working Group has been focusing on raising awareness for programs from the Hartford History Project lecture series and is currently discussing plans for an 11th hour possibly  on the racial aspects of ecological justice or on another social justice issue.  The Book Club expects to meet monthly starting in January 2023, discussing topics of environmental racism and critical race theory.
